Regular exercise is important.  Exercise is one of the few proven methods for improving one’s health and it is particularly important for people with MS to do regular moderate exercise.  Exercise can help maintain strength, co-ordination and flexibility, and can also help to reduce spasms and relieve stress.

Remember to:

  • Develop an exercise program that best suits your specific needs and capabilities (an appropriately trained exercise physiologist can help you do this).
  • Base your exercise program on activities that you enjoy
  • Set a regular routine for exercising
  • Stay cool while exercising
  • Always rest after exercise

Being as active as possible is beneficial, whether this involves a regular exercise group, sport or leisure activity. Even keeping up with the housework can be good exercise! However, there are certain types of activity that are thought to be particularly good for people with MS. These include:

  • Hydrotherapy
  • Weight training
  • Yoga
  • Pilates
